Watch our exclusive interview with Chinese jewelry designer Bao Bao Wan. A familiar face on the Beijing and Hong Kong social scenes, Bao Bao is not only a prized jewelry designer, but an art personality whose talent is recognized the world over. A creative mind inspired by nature and Eastern symbolism, Bao Bao is the cutting edge, in every sense, of the Chinese jewelry industry.
Intrigued by paradox and contrasts, Bao Bao defines her creations as “feminine, impossible and loud”, in a fine balance between tradition and modernity, pop and opulence, symbols and nature. Made of 18k gold and embellished with precious stones, Bao Bao’s creations certainly make their mark.
ABOUT BAO BAO WAN
Bao Bao was born and grew up in Beijing and at the tender age of 15 left her home city to further her education abroad. She attended Sarah Lawrence, where she studied photography with Joel Sternfield, and went on to complete her studies in Paris, where she fast became the most well-known Chinese socialite in France and the first Chinese woman to be invited to the Bal des Débutantes at the Hôtel Crillon. In 2007 Wan’s passion for art and fashion found new interpretation through jewelry design; within just a year of her graduation from the Gemological Institute of America, Bao Bao Wan Fine Jewelry was launched. Before long Bao Bao was a most sought-after jewelry designer, collaborating with Allen Chan, Limi Yamamoto and Theo Fennel on the Precious Collection project for Forever Mark in 2009. More recently she has worked together with Zaha Hadid, Stephen Webster and Patrick Mauboussin on the EnlightenedTM project for Swarovski.
